The sunny days are approaching, and you can already imagine your feet in the water… But then comes one of the most common concerns for parents as summer approaches: should we put a pool diaper on our baby? Or is a simple swimsuit enough? We asked Nicolas, a swimming instructor, who explains these different options.
The classic swimsuit which resembles an “adult” swimsuit. Its only purpose is aesthetic, as it must be worn with a pool diaper underneath. However, be careful: wearing both a pool diaper and a swimsuit on top can limit the baby’s movements in the water.
The swimsuit with an integrated diaper, which looks like a washable diaper. Reusable indefinitely, this is an eco-friendly alternative to disposable pool diapers. If you go to the pool frequently with your little one, opting for a swimsuit with an integrated diaper will also be more cost-effective in the long run.
In essence, there is no difference. Both products serve the same purpose: to retain the baby’s stool in the water. Urine is not held by either a pool diaper or a baby-specific swimsuit. The only difference, in my opinion, is the price! Disposable pool diapers are quite expensive and not eco-friendly. Often, for the price of a single pack of these diapers, you can buy a special baby swimsuit that will last the entire summer.
Baby swimsuits are typically well-covered around the buttocks, thighs, and tummy. The crotch area has an additional layer that will catch any potential stools. If you’re going to an outdoor pool or beach, you can also opt for a swimsuit with sun protection, which shields the baby’s skin from harmful UV rays.
It’s quite rare. On one hand, the time spent swimming with your baby is usually very short (it’s recommended not to exceed 30 minutes), and on the other hand, cold water naturally slows down digestion.
However, keep in mind that if a baby does manage to have a bowel movement in the water, the pool must be evacuated for cleaning. So, if you see a big mess coming, it’s important to immediately leave the water to change the swim diaper or clean the soiled swimsuit.
