Becoming a parent means feeling immense pride in your child—whether it’s their first steps or their ability to articulate words perfectly. Faced with such talents, some parents naturally wonder: could their child be advanced for their age? Here are 10 signs that may indicate your child is gifted or has high potential.
Many believe that an early walker or talker is a sign of giftedness. However, the opposite is often true. High-potential children can actually seem delayed in some areas.
Because of their perfectionism, they may skip developmental steps—for example, not crawling and instead waiting until they’re fully ready to walk.
According to Laurence Lalande, founder of two schools for gifted students and author of Help! My Child Is Gifted!:
"Gifted children may even unconsciously delay their growth due to a fear of growing up."
Is your baby particularly attentive? This could be an early sign of giftedness. Highly intelligent children tend to be hyper-aware of colors, images, sounds, smells, and tastes.
Even during bath time or diaper changes, they remain in a constant state of alertness. While most babies focus for about 5 minutes, a gifted baby can concentrate for up to 8 minutes at a time.
At around 6–8 months, your baby reaches for an object— and they want it immediately! Otherwise, expect a tantrum.
As they grow older, this impatience often continues. The frustration stems from a gap between their rapid thoughts and their physical ability to express them through speaking or writing. This mismatch can lead to outbursts and even difficulties with handwriting (dysgraphia).
A lack of sleep can be a strong indicator of giftedness. Highly intelligent children typically:
✔ Sleep less but more deeply
✔ Need less time to recover
✔ Have trouble falling asleep
If your child is a light sleeper or struggles with bedtime, this could be a clue that they are gifted.
Laurence Lalande explains that gifted children often have emotional immaturity. They may:
✔ Demand constant love and attention
✔ Act like a baby at times
"They are restless, insatiable, and crave attention because they lack self-confidence."
Feeling different from their peers, some seek attention, while others blend in to be accepted. Their hypersensitivity makes every experience more intense.
Gifted children have insatiable curiosity and often develop deep obsessions with subjects such as:
✔ Medieval history
✔ Dinosaurs
✔ Space
✔ Religion
✔ Death
They ask endless philosophical questions and devour books and encyclopedias on their favorite topics.
Hypersensitivity makes it difficult for gifted children to regulate emotions. Their reactions can be:
✔ Intense and unpredictable
✔ A mix of anger, tears, or complete indifference
For example, they may burst into tears or act distant when you pick them up from daycare. This is their way of protecting themselves from being overwhelmed by emotion.
Numbers fascinate gifted children. They may:
✔ Constantly count everything—traffic lights, stacked diapers, etc.
✔ Love pretend play like running a store
✔ By age 2, they may count to 10 and even read a clock
A gifted child’s memory is astonishing. They:
✔ Effortlessly memorize songs and rhymes
✔ Correct you if you skip words in their bedtime story
✔ Remember details long after you’ve forgotten them
If your child never stops asking “Why?”, you may have a little genius on your hands. They want instant answers to everything—because their thoughts race ahead at full speed!
If you recognize these signs in your child, they may be gifted! Every child is unique, so fostering their curiosity, sensitivity, and talents will help them thrive.
