The thought of changing their newborn’s diaper can be a source of anxiety for expectant parents. But don’t worry—there’s no need to practice on a doll before birth! At the maternity ward, nurses are there to guide new parents in adopting the right techniques. In general, after just a few diaper changes, parents get the hang of it like pros, even with their eyes closed. Here are our tips to make diaper changing a breeze and even an enjoyable bonding moment with your baby.

1/ Have All Essentials Within Reach

Whether you use cotton and water, cleansing lotion, or wipes, it’s essential to have all the necessary diaper-changing supplies at hand. The reason is simple: never leave your baby unattended on the bed or changing table. Even if they’re only a few weeks old and not yet rolling over, accidents can happen in an instant. Some parents prefer to change their baby on a simple changing mat placed on the floor—this is a safe option but not very comfortable for the adult! Also, prepare a clean onesie or spare clothes in advance to avoid making multiple trips with your baby half-dressed.

2/ Change the Diaper as Often as Needed

In the first few weeks of life, babies typically need a diaper change  8 to 10 times a day! Ideally, you should change the diaper before and after each feeding and whenever it is soiled. Frequent diaper changes help prevent irritation and diaper rash. Before putting on a fresh diaper, make sure to clean your baby’s skin carefully using cleansing lotion, and don’t forget to wipe between all the cute little folds of skin! If you prefer using a soft cotton pad with warm water, be sure to dry the skin thoroughly with a clean towel before applying a protective cream, if needed.

3/ Turn Diaper Changing into a Special Bonding Moment

Diaper changing is part of daily hygiene care, but it’s also an opportunity to bond with your baby! Some babies feel tense during diaper changes—they may be uncomfortable, cry, or squirm. It’s up to the caregiver to  comfort them, maybe by giving them a gentle massage or singing a little song. Maintaining eye contact and speaking softly in a reassuring voice can turn these few minutes into a precious moment of connection. Who would have thought?

4/ Choose Safe and Healthy Products

A baby’s skin is in contact with diapers for  about 22 hours a day, so it’s crucial to choose high-quality products free of harmful ingredients. JOONE diapers, including our new Origine line, are made in France and are completely safe. They keep your baby’s bottom dry while providing excellent protection! Every parent has their own habits and preferences when it comes to baby care products. Cleansing lotion is a great alternative for parents looking for a gentle, natural product that respects their baby’s delicate skin.

5/ Handle Your Baby Gently and Secure the Diaper Properly

Diaper changing involves several key steps:

- Lay your baby on a  clean towel or changing mat.

- Open the dirty diaper and use the front panel to  wipe the bottom before folding it under your baby’s backside. It’s best to gently roll your baby’s hips to the side rather than lifting their legs, which can strain their joints.

- Clean the skin with cleansing lotion, wipes, or a soft cotton pad with warm water.  Make sure the skin is completely dry.

- Put on a fresh diaper, making sure the  fasteners sit at belly button level. And don’t forget: if you have a baby boy, point his penis downward to prevent leaks up his belly!

With these tips, diaper changing will become a smooth and stress-free experience for both you and your baby!
